Meeting the Mother Within
Becoming
Courses
A self-paced online course for women who want to understand their transition to motherhood and meet themselves on the other side of it with compassion.
There is a name for everything you are going through.
You might not have heard it yet. Your midwife may not have mentioned it at your appointments. Your friends who have children probably never used this word either. It does not even appear in the English language dictionary. But the experience it describes is real, it is significant, and if you are in the thick of becoming a mother right now, it is almost certainly happening to you.
That word is matrescence.
Matrescence is the developmental transition a woman goes through when she becomes a mother. It touches every part of who you are — your body, your brain, your emotions and your sense of self. It is as significant as adolescence, and yet most of us enter it with very little understanding of what is ahead.
I made it my mission to change that.
About The Course
Becoming — Meeting the Mother Within is a warm, informative and deeply personal online course that takes you through the four dimensions of matrescence. Over 30 to 40 minutes, we will explore the physical, psychological, emotional and social changes that are part of this developmental life stage — and you will have the chance to reflect on your own experience along the way.
Whether you are pregnant, newly postpartum or further along in your motherhood journey, this course will help you make sense of what you are going through. And more than that, it will help you offer yourself the compassion you deserve.
Because knowledge is power. And you deserve to enter this with your eyes open.
What We Will Cover Together
The Physical Transition
The physical changes of pregnancy are the most visible part of matrescence, but they go far deeper than most people realise. We will look at what is actually happening in your body from conception right through to postnatal recovery — including the changes that happen before a baby is even born. We will also gently challenge the idea that you should feel like yourself again by six weeks postpartum, and explore what it really means to move forward rather than bounce back.
The Psychological Transition
Did you know that your brain physically changes during pregnancy and motherhood? In this section we will look at what those changes mean in practice — from the increase in anxiety and intrusive thoughts that so many new mothers experience, to the rewiring that supports bonding and learning in your new role. This is not weakness. It is neuroscience, and it makes a lot more sense when you understand what is actually happening.
The Emotional Transition
Motherhood can bring tremendous joy. It can also bring grief, doubt, fear and loss — sometimes all at once. So many women experience a push and pull between conflicting feelings but feel they cannot say so out loud. In this section we will explore that push and pull honestly, including the secondary feelings of shame and guilt that can follow, and why those feelings are far more common than we are led to believe.
The Social Transition
The shift in your sense of self, your relationships, your social circle and your identity is one of the most profound — and least talked about — parts of becoming a mother. Who are you now? Where do you fit? What parts of yourself are you afraid of losing? This section holds space for all of those questions, including the quiet grief that often sits underneath them.
By the end of this course you will have a clear understanding of matrescence and why it matters. You will be able to identify which areas are most present in your own experience right now, and you will have a new way of approaching yourself through this season of change — one rooted in awareness rather than expectation.
